In 935 AD, Wenceslaus was assassinated by his brother Boleslaus in what has been described as a coup. The exact details of his death are unclear, but the most widely accepted version is that Boleslaus, along with a group of conspirators, ambushed Wenceslaus while he was on his way to church on the Feast of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian. Wenceslaus was struck down and killed, and his body was later venerated as a martyr.

Wenceslaus' death marked a turning point for the region. His assassination and subsequent canonization as a saint turned him into a symbol of Christian virtue and martyrdom. His tragic end and the perception of his virtuous life led to his being celebrated as a saint by the Catholic Church.
